My picks from the Costa Book Awards Shortlist 2016

The Costa Book Awards’s shortlist has generated significant comment on how out of the 20 nominated authors – 14 are women.  Amazing.

Here are the books that pique my interest and are firmly on the December TBR pile:

  1. The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry.  Having won the Waterstones Book of the Year earlier this week and gathering dust on my TBR pile this is my next read.
  2. Let Them Eat Chaos by Kate Tempest.  I saw Kate perform this as spoken word in Croatia in August.  I am seeing her perform it again at the Roundhouse however, reading it and listening to it are two different things – I want to connect with it personally.  So that is on the pile.
  3. The Gustav Sonata by Rose Tremain.  I have heard such amazing things about this book.  The questions around the difference between friendship and love and commitment and neutrality are interesting concepts which I hear Rose Tremain has poised beautifully.

So there are my picks!  Below is a picture of the full shortlist – are you planning on reading any of them?  Or have you read any of them already?  If you recommend any of the other books – let me know!
